For young people, the pressures of daily life can be overwhelming. Adolescence is a unique and formative period marked by significant physical, emotional, and social changes. These changes, combined with external factors like poverty, abuse, and violence, can make adolescents particularly vulnerable to mental health challenges. In fact, globally, it is estimated that 1 in 7 (14%) 10–19 year-olds experience mental health conditions, yet these remain largely unrecognised and untreated (WHO).

Young people often face a wide range of struggles that may not seem significant at first but can have a profound impact on their mental health. Academic pressure, family conflicts, peer pressure, social media comparisons, and loneliness are just a few of the everyday challenges that can accumulate, leading to feelings of hopelessness and despair. The stigma surrounding mental health, combined with the misconception that only those with a diagnosed illness need support, often prevents young people from seeking help.

Recognising the need to shine a light on these everyday struggles, Sisonke Wellness Foundation is launching the “Everyday Struggles” campaign. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the hidden mental health costs of daily life and to create a supportive environment where young people can feel heard, understood, and empowered to seek help.

Why This Campaign Matters

Mental health is a broad spectrum that affects all of us. While mental illness involves specific conditions like depression or anxiety, mental health encompasses our overall emotional and psychological well-being. And the truth is, everyone struggles with mental health issues at some point. These struggles can be triggered by life events, stress, or even the expectations placed on us by society.

For young people, the pressures of daily life can be overwhelming. According to recent studies, nearly 1 in 5 young people experience a mental health challenge, yet many don’t seek help. The stigma surrounding mental health, combined with the misconception that only those with a diagnosed illness need support, often prevents young people from reaching out.

But mental health is not just about illness—it’s about how we cope with life’s ups and downs. And the challenges young people face every day, from academic stress to social media comparisons, can have a profound impact on their mental well-being.

What Is the Everyday Struggles Campaign?

The Everyday Struggles Campaign aims to bring these hidden challenges into the spotlight. By raising awareness about the everyday issues that can affect mental health, we hope to foster a more compassionate and understanding environment where young people feel empowered to speak up and seek help.

Throughout the campaign, we’ll be exploring topics such as:

  • Academic Pressure: How the stress of schoolwork and exams can impact mental health.
  • Bullying and Cyberbullying: The effects of being bullied, both in person and online, and how to find support.
  • Social Media Comparisons: How the constant comparison to others’ highlight reels can lead to feelings of inadequacy.
  • Family Conflicts: The toll that family problems can take on mental well-being.
  • Loneliness: How feeling isolated or disconnected can deeply affect a person’s mental health.

These are just a few of the issues we’ll be covering, and we’ll also be sharing stories from young people who have faced these challenges, offering advice and resources, and encouraging open conversations about mental health.

How You Can Get Involved

We’re inviting everyone—young people, parents, teachers, friends, and guardians—to join the conversation. If you’re a young person, we want to hear your story. How have these everyday struggles affected you? What has helped you cope? By sharing your experiences, you can help others who might be going through something similar.

For adults, this campaign is an opportunity to learn more about the challenges young people face and how to support them. Whether it’s starting a conversation, offering a listening ear, or simply being there when needed, your support can make a world of difference.

The Impact We Hope to Make

Our goal with the Everyday Struggles Campaign is to create a safe and supportive space where young people feel heard, understood, and valued. By raising awareness and encouraging open dialogue, we hope to reduce the stigma around mental health and prevent the silent suffering that too often leads to serious consequences.

At Sisonke Wellness Foundation, we believe that no one should have to face their struggles alone. Together, we can make a difference by showing that mental health matters—every day, for everyone.

Join us in this important campaign and help us spread the word. Follow us on social media, share your stories, and let’s work together to make sure that every young person knows they are not alone in their journey. 💙
