Women’s Month is a time to celebrate the strength and resilience of women, but it also offers an opportunity to address some of the challenges women face, particularly regarding mental health. Sisonke Wellness Foundation and UNICEF UKZN PMB  are committed to bringing awareness on these often-overlooked issues, especially the impact of hormonal changes on mental well-being this Women’s Month. In this article, we share insights from a candid interview conducted by our team, where one woman bravely opened up about her struggles and successes in managing the mental health challenges brought on by hormonal shifts.

The Impact of Hormonal Changes on Mental Health

Hormonal changes can intensely affect mental health, especially during different stages of a woman’s life. Our interviewee shared that hormonal changes were particularly challenging during her teen years. She recalled, “Hormonal changes have been the biggest challenge throughout the various stages of my life. During my teen years, my mood swings were out of this world during menstruation. I would feel irritable, anxious, and emotional for no reason, and these rollercoasters of emotions greatly impacted my mental health in a negative way.” This emotional confusion, often triggered by hormonal fluctuations, made everyday life feel overwhelming and isolating for her.

Emotional and Mental Health Effects

The mental health challenges brought on by hormonal shifts can be overwhelming. Our interviewee described how anxiety and depression became regular challenges in her life. “I went through phases of anxiousness where the simplest worries would grow into crippling fears. Additionally, depression manifested itself, especially during my teen years. The most difficult were my mood fluctuations, which influenced not only how I felt but also how I interacted with people.” The struggle to maintain control over her emotions led heightened feelings of loneliness and frustration,  which further intensified her mental health challenges. These experiences highlight the importance of recognizing and addressing the emotional toll that hormonal changes can have on women.

Coping Strategies for Managing Hormonal Impacts

Despite the difficulties, there are effective strategies for managing the mental health effects of hormonal changes. Our interviewee emphasized the importance of mindfulness practices and self-care. “Deep breathing exercises and other mindfulness techniques have been quite beneficial in helping me to stay grounded during periods of extreme worry. I’ve been able to see patterns and track my mood swings by keeping a journal, which has helped me process the emotions properly. I invest in self-care days once a week which looks like solo dates to a fancy restaurant, shopping, longer & relaxing baths, reading books, and taking a walk or hiking.” These practices provided her with much-needed relief and helped her regain control over her mental well-being.

The Importance of a Support System

“My support system has been vital in navigating these challenges. My family has been incredibly understanding, providing a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on when needed. Friends who have gone through similar experiences have also been a great source of comfort and advice.” she said. Additionally, she found help from healthcare professionals during her high school and university years, which provided her with valuable guidance and support. This shows that a having a strong support system is vital in navigating the mental health challenges associated with hormonal changes.

Breaking the Stigma around Hormonal Changes

One of the biggest obstacles in addressing mental health issues related to hormonal changes is the stigma attached to them. “I felt compelled to conceal my difficulties for a very long time out of concern that people would write them off as ‘just hormones’ or think less of me. But I’ve discovered that keeping quiet does nothing but maintain the stereotype. Through candid conversations about my experiences with friends, family, and even in public spaces, I’ve discovered that a lot of other women have encountered the same difficulties.” By breaking the silence, our interviewee found not only personal relief but also a sense of solidarity with other women facing similar challenges. She encourages all women to speak up, as doing so not only benefits them but also reduces the isolation felt by others in similar situations.

Advice for Women Facing Hormonal Mental Health Challenges

To any woman struggling with mental health issues due to hormonal changes, our interviewee offers this advice: “You are not alone, and your feelings are valid. It’s critical to pay attention to your body and mind and to seek assistance when necessary. Don’t be scared to act, whether it’s reaching out to a friend, visiting a therapist, or looking into alternative therapies. Keep in mind that caring for your mental health is equally as vital as your physical health.”

During Women’s Month, it’s essential to recognise and address the mental health challenges that hormonal changes can bring. “I want to emphasise how critical it is to acknowledge and treat the negative effects of changing hormones on mental health during Women’s Month. Even though these difficulties play a big role in the lives of many women, they are frequently disregarded or ignored. Women need to feel free to talk about these topics without worrying about being judged.” At Sisonke Wellness Foundation, we believe that by breaking the silence and supporting one another, we can ensure that every woman has the resources and assistance she needs to manage her mental health and thrive in all aspects of life.

As we celebrate Women’s Month, let’s also take the time to acknowledge and address the mental health challenges that hormonal changes can bring. By sharing stories, offering support, and breaking the silence, we can create a more understanding and compassionate world for all women.
